Urter i hagen

"Treetop-walk" i Denmark.

...I cant believe I paid to do this! ;)

"Mammuth-cave" i Margareth River.

"Valley of the Giants" , Denmark.

Her kunne barna nyte ha samling ute i det fri nesten ret gjennom!

Stranda, som ogs l rett over veien :)

Norske venner i Australia :)

Third grade!

We are entering third grade this month, according to our curriculum. Another year of homeschooling is done! I am happy to announce that we still enjoy homeschooling and the lifestyle that comes with teaching and learning. I am blessed with a child who is eager to learn, which makes it fun and rewarding for all of us. During 2nd. grade we've used the AbekaBook-curriculum and we will be using the same this following year. The books have a learning-curve that suites our daughter well, plus they are colorful and fun to work with!

One of our main focuses this year has been working on speaking, writing and reading English. Since we have, and probably will continue to use English curriculum, this has been essential. We arrived Australia one and a half month ago, and during our time here she has been able to put her language-skills into practise, which has been great!

We have gotten to know many of the homeschooling-families here and it is so nice for us to see how they do things and apply some of their methods and tips into our homeschooling. My daughter keeps a scrapbook-journal while we are over here, I am hoping this will help her treasure memories of this trip and remember all the wonderful people we have been blessed getting to know and the fun we had together.

We are looking forward to this coming year, spending time with friends, family, newacquaintances and seeing what plans God may have in store for 2014 !

May God Bless you!

Kjemi med pappa!

Her prver andreklassingen seg p "ordentlig" kjemi!

Research-poster

Our second-grader did her very first research on her own! The topic "Thor Heyerdahl" (norwegian explorer and adventurer) was interesting to her. She took notes while watching a documentary-movie on his "Ra"-expeditions. Afterwards we sat down together and formed this poster.

Hjemmelaget barnegrt!

God frokost!

Smoothie-is!

Snegle-lp!

Egg-eksperiment- og bibel-time :)

Slik gjr man:

"Do not be misled :Bad company corrupts good character."

~1 Corinthians 15:33

"Blessed is the one who always trembles before God, but whoever hardens their hearts falls into trouble"

~ Proverbs 28:14

True prayer

"We can teach our children to say their prayers, but we cannot teach them to pray Some of you perhaps may read prayers in the family. I will not denounce the practice, but I will say this much about it; you may read those prayers for 70 years and yet you may never once pray, for prayer is quite a different thing from mere words. True prayer is the trading of the heart with God."

Charles Spurgeon

Ferdig mikset!

Salsadressing til!

Oppskriften :)

Sommertips! hjemmelaget iskrem!

Pisk eggedosis av egg og sukker

Pisk krem

Planting seeds this spring!

Through the winter we have collected a variety of fruit-seeds. These were planted in little bio-pots bought at the grocery-store.You can put the potsright in the soil, when the little sprouts are showing. Less mess and less waste :)

This was the finished-result and we kept them inside for a few weeks until the weather was warmer.

Today, about a month and a half later, we planted the chive-sprouts out in my daughters flowerbed.Almost noneof the other seeds has come up, it has probably been to cold at night, but one chili-sprout was taken inside and we hope to get fruit on this one! I love teaching my children about nature this way. They enjoy it so much when they get to participate :)

Fruit-trees

This spring we planted three fruit trees in what is to be a little fruit-tree-forrest in our backyard. This year we picked out one apple-tree and two different types of cherry-trees. I want this little forrest to be a place where we can play and have picnicks for those days when we want to stay at home. The children were good helpers and got to learn about the process of planting a tree.

The plastic-bags with pebbles in them, are for keeping the branches down, this will give the tree more fruit and the children will be able to reach the branches. In a couple of months we will take the plastic-bagsoff, and the branches will be shaped this way.

My gifts <3

On the beach

One of our favorite things to do :)

I wanted to share with you one of theactivities we do as often as we can- simply because it is fun and you learn alot. The beach is great for exploring, inquiring and discovering! My children and I love to collect and learn about sea-shells,kelp,rocks, sticks, sand, leafes... you name it! Of course we enjoy it evenmore when the weather is warm but even on days like this, we often put on our wind-coats and go exploring by the sea. The things we collect are often used in different craft-projects. After a day on the beach we usually read or watch a movie on the things we have seen. It is very rewarding, both for me and my familiy, as we learn about Gods wonderful creation, sea-safety, changing seasons.... alot is apliable to be taught here, not to mention all of the good memories that are being made :)

Making an octopus!

All done! After the making, while I was cleaning up, he went and "bathed" the octopusses in the bathroom-sink... he might have heard that they live in the water :)

science-day at the zoo

The weather was beautiful anddaddy had a day off from workso we all headed to the local zoo for school. Who says schoolis boring?!I love giving the word "school" a positive meaning to my children. The zoo is perfect for science- all the animals has signs on their cage or house that says a little bit about them, where they origin from and so on. My second grader (She just started on her 2. grade books by the way :) ) gets to practice reading at the same time. The most important thing is that we all have fun together, the learning cames naturally that way.

Is she not brave?! :)

My "braveheart"

mommy and little brother meeting the lemurs

A peacock showing us his beautiful feathers- my daughter is impressed!

The zoo also had monkeys, suricats, pigs, rabbits, different types of reptiles and other animals.Outside there was anice playgound for the children and benches where we could have a picknic right by, lovely! We bought an entrance-card that lasts all year, to be able to go there often.

Overprotecting?

One day I heard someone say that alot of moms just go too far in protecting their children. That this was a trend. He mentioned homeschooling when talking about this and ofcourse that got this mommys attention. I can not speak for every mommy out there but I want to raise my voice on this one. Our choice of homeschooling is part of teaching our children about life. I want my kids to feel safe and protected and STILL learn. To protect what we have been given, our children, comes as natural to us as brushing out teeth in the morning. Not only us human beings do this, you see it often in nature as well. Natural, since we are all of Gods creation. This "trend" however, that this man was talking about in such a negative manner, caught my attention because I have noticed it too. I have seen, heard and read so much these last years about mothers all around the globe realizing that there are things out there we need to guard our kids from. I am thrilled! When something fits in with the word of my Creator, I know it is the right way to go about things. This so called trend is really mommys all around the world coming back to their calling and loving it! Overprotection is arelatively word, different people put different meanings into it. Some children might needs more or a different kind of protectiong than others, it is not up to me to judge. I have two children and these two are my gifts to protect from the things in this world that will harm them. I try making sure I dont protect them from things they will learn and benefit from, even if it might hurt a bit right there and then. Valuable lessons are learn by life itself. Jesus was not spared, but in the midst of his suffereing, his Heavenly Father, was there. The same way we have to be there for our daughters and sons, they need us to be their loving guide.

My children just got a baby-bunny .Adorable little guy. Lets say they forgot to lock him up one night.Hebreaksloose from his cage and a foxgets him. What do I tell my kids? Thats right! The truth. Something else would not be "protecting" but lying. the knowledge of the rabbit being eaten by a fox would hurt for a while, but they would learn lessons as well. This is just one little example of life. I dont want to protect my children from life. Things I do want to protect my children from are things of this world. I do notalways believe in the phrase;"Let them just go about, they will learn from their mistakes". As a child grows into an adult, there are some things they are to learn, by trying and failing. Drugs are not one of them. Drinking or smoking is not one of them. Hanging out with people that want them no good, is not one of them. Bulimia due to being exposed to todays unattainable ideal body trough commercials and magazines, is not one of them. Cancer and heart-disease due to poor nutricial habits, is not one of them. Poor health due to sitting still playing video-games ,is not one of them. Adishonest peronality due to being lied to, is not one of them.

So, I am a mommy, I have a great responsibility. Who am I too answer to; a manwho tells me to let my childrenexperience the evil of this would because in the end, love will come out of it? Dont think I will go with that one. I know someone great, in fact He is the Greatest. His word speaks for itself.

Matthew 18:10- Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

Mark 9:42- And whosoever shall offend one of [these] little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.

Psalms 127:3- Lo, children [are] an heritage of the LORD: [and] the fruit of the womb [is his] reward.

Luke 17:2- It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.

Matthew 25:40- And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done [it] unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done [it] unto me.

Matthew 18:6- But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and [that] he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Handyman!

Little brotherwas very happy about his new scooter and decided to put it together himself :)

Studying the instructions carefully...

Important to keep the right working position.

It was so fun to watch him work, he seemed to love it :)

Bambi!

Today dad brought home this little fellow. The children were thrilled! I must admit, I have not beentoo excited about getting a rabbit but you just got to love this cutie :) I think we will get along just fine and I am so happy for my children to have a pet!

Curriculum prep. for 2nd. grade

Last week I finished next years year-plan and today I sent in an order for our 2nd. grade curriculum, plus some materials for tot-school. I am so happy to have this done :) Last year we put together our own curriculum, which has workes good. This year I decided to try an English curriculum and modify it to suit us better. My choice is a 2nd. grade-kit from A Beka Book.Since this is a foreign language-curriculum, I added some books from the 1st. grade-kit as well. They also have a lot of CD's and DVD's and we decided to use some of them too. I have a good feeling about this curriculum choice and by being ahead in the planning of next school- year I get a chance to read through it and do the final planning before this summer :)

Play-dough-time!

She loooooves play-dough, can you tell?!

It was "one of those days" where little brother decided to be not so cooperative- he would rather walk around on the table, getting the play-dough stuck under his feet, rather than play with the dough, this is the reason we dont have any pictures from "the making"... But, here is the result! We went for the zoo-theme and made ourselves these cute little animals :)

Checking out the zoo :)

We keep it in plastic-containers after opening to make it last longer :O)

What our day might look like

I have had many people asking me how we do homeschooling and what our days looks like and to be honest, it is a hard question to answer. The reson being that the content of our days varies alot. Some days we do excursions, some days we go exploring nature, some days we have a certain theme and focus on that through drawing, art, writing and experiences, some days we stay at home to discover and learn in and nearby our home, other days we are out traveling or do arts and crafts-nights with friends. As you see there is no way to give a quick answer to how we do it, but I have taken some picturesthroughout one day where we spend most of our day at home to show how our day might look like ;)

Bigsister is learning how to operate the stove while littlebrother just wants to get the breakfast-rolls in there!

The kids help set the table and we are ready for breakfast. Lately our theme around the breakfast-table has been Gods ten commandments. Each day we have talked about one on the commandments and discussed how we can apply them into our lives. Bigsister is the kind that asks ALOT of questions, which is great for her learning! Littlebrother looks like he is most interested in whether to choose cheese or jam for his roll, but I am sure he benefits from our talks as well.

I made this Chore-chart and stuck it up on the wall for bigsister to know what needs to be done before lunch (since she is only a 1.st. grader we are not too strict, if there is one day we just want to play or do something else, we do :) ). Although such a chart has been good to keep a flow in the learning-process. After a while we change our chores, but they always include math, writing, language and reading.

Starting to learn the times-table. We printed these fun math-sheets and laminated them to last longer.

Each day we practise "read-a loud" and by doing that we see what is good and what needs to be worked on. She chooses the page and reads out loud for us. The children loves routines and by having these few things we do almost every day, they get a sence ofpredictability which is good for them.

Littlebrother is just being a one-year-old :)

Littlebrother is doing great in toddler-school and loves to learn. Here we use little colored beads to learn the different colors, both in Norwegian and English.

"Peek-a-Boo"!

Just plain play! :)

Lunch is being made and my goofy-girl is eager to learn how to cook. Cooking is a great way to learn about measurements, food in other countries, healthy and unhealthy food, safety,calculation... you name it!

Eating the food is not bad either!

Out playing and learning at the same time. One square for each of the years twelve months.

Doing math using sidewalk-chalk.

When daddy gets home we make dinner together...

and eat dinner together :)
